World, meet Sweet Joseph AKA 21-year old Daryl Johns.
Born in Engelwood, New Jersey, he was always going to create a unique sound. With the influence of his jazz drummer Father and saxophonist Mother, Johns has never stopped experimenting with all types of instruments. By the age of 13, Johns was a formidable musician - finishing in 3rd place at the world famous Thelonious Monk competition, a significant international event for identifying and launching the careers of young aspiring musicians, against instrumentalists 20-30 years his senior.
Following his prestigious teenage years, Johns went to music college in New York City. He continued his obsessive study of jazz; however, he began to explore other forms of music when his hands became impaired from playing upright bass over the years. Johns found a community of similar jazz musicians disillusioned by the restraint of the genre such as longtime compatriot Ashwin Prassana (of the band Breeder) who left school to make guitar driven rock recordings on a 4-track (Tascam 644) cassette recorder. It was during this time Johns originated and honed his idea for Sweet Joseph: pop rock influenced by the jazz sounds of Pat Metheny.
Through the high pitch nursery rhyme melodies and urgent tempos, Sweet Joseph crafts guitar-rock-driven-bubblegum-pop through the lens of contemporary Jazz for the sake of feeling good. After playing bass for NYC Jazz outfit Onyx Collective in 2017/2018, Johns’ freewheeling music prowess encouraged the Lemon Twigs to ask Johns to play bass for their current tour.
